The Primary Bedroom
17TH CENTURY JACOBEAN WILLIAM III CIRCA 1650 ENGLiSH OAK TESTER FOUR POSTER BED
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare, original circa 1650 William III hand carved Jacobean Tester four poster bed frame with exquisite carvings to the back panel and roof top
These beds are about as rare and collectable as they come, it is 100% original, all hand sawn, the back panel alone is worth a small fortune as is the roof which was very hard to picture due to the angle
The woodwork has been cleaned waxed and polished, it will have the original patina and so on throughout, we have not refinished it specifically to keep the period patina
Please note this sale only includes what's pictured, there's no mattress as the new owners usually want to buy their own new
The bed will be shipped fully dismantled as you can see in the last picture, it takes two people around 10 minutes to build it, its not complicated
These types of beds were made with very privative bolts, the fixing points over the years develop a lot of character, the two base posts are secured with a large wooden spigot at the bottom and a small metal pin and that top, as such they rotate and move but are of course secure. If you plan to use this bed I recommend having some split washers fitted and threads tapped so you can compress them down, its not essential but it will make the posts sit straighter and in one place

Alan Turing 8 inch Premium Bust Solid Hand Finished Original Dated Sculpture
Alan Mathison Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist. He was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing a formalisation of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science.
Born in London, Turing was raised in southern England. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge, and in 1938, earned a doctorate degree from Princeton University. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre that produced Ultra intelligence. He led Hut 8, the section responsible for German naval cryptanalysis. Turing devised techniques for speeding the breaking of German ciphers, including improvements to the pre-war Polish bomba method, an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine. He played a crucial role in cracking intercepted messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Axis powers in many engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic.
After the war, Turing worked at the National Physical Laboratory, where he designed the Automatic Computing Engine, one of the first designs for a stored-program computer. In 1948, Turing joined Max Newman's Computing Machine Laboratory at the University of Manchester, where he contributed to the development of early Manchester computers and became interested in mathematical biology. Turing wrote on the chemical basis of morphogenesis and predicted oscillating chemical reactions such as the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction, first observed in the 1960s. Despite these accomplishments, he was never fully recognised during his lifetime because much of his work was covered by the Official Secrets Act.
In 1952, Turing was prosecuted for homosexual acts. He accepted hormone treatment, a procedure commonly referred to as chemical castration, as an alternative to prison. Turing died on 7 June 1954, aged 41, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death as suicide, but the evidence is also consistent with accidental poisoning. Following a campaign in 2009, British prime minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology for "the appalling way [Turing] was treated". Queen Elizabeth II granted a pardon in 2013. The term "Alan Turing law" is used informally to refer to a 2017 law in the UK that retroactively pardoned men cautioned or convicted under historical legislation that outlawed homosexual acts.
Turing left an extensive legacy in mathematics and computing which has become widely recognised with statues and many things named after him, including an annual award for computing innovation. His portrait appears on the Bank of England £50 note, first released on 23 June 2021 to coincide with his birthday. The audience vote in a 2019 BBC series named Turing the greatest person of the 20th century.

Large Early 20th Century Bronze Bust of Antinous,
depicted as Dionysus, after Ferdinand Barbedienne, with head slightly tilted downwards, wearing grape vines in hair, on a bronze pedestal on stepped white marble base, height 57cm
Antinous, also called Antinoös, ( c. 111 – c. 130) was a Greek youth from Bithynia, a favourite and lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Following his premature death before his 20th birthday, Antinous was deified on Hadrian's orders, being worshipped in both the Greek East and Latin West, sometimes as a god (θεός, theós) and sometimes merely as a hero (ἥρως, hḗrōs).
Portrait bust of King Ludwig II of Bavaria
Portrait bust of King Ludwig II of Bavaria
Faience or terracotta patinated
Ludwig II (25 August 1845 – 13 June 1886), also called the Swan King or the Fairy Tale King (der Märchenkönig), was King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He also held the titles of Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, Duke of Franconia, and Duke in Swabia. Outside Germany, he is at times called "the Mad King" or Mad King Ludwig.
Ludwig never married nor had any known mistresses. His diary, private letters, and other documents reveal his strong homosexual desires, which he struggled to suppress to remain true to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Homosexuality had not been punishable in Bavaria since 1813, but the unification of Germany under Prussian hegemony in 1871 instated Paragraph 175, which criminalized homosexual acts between males.
Throughout his reign, Ludwig had a succession of close friendships with men, including his aide-de-camp the Bavarian prince Paul von Thurn und Taxis, chief equerry and master of the horse Richard Hornig, the Hungarian theater actor Josef Kainz, and courtier Alfons Weber. Letters from Ludwig reveal that the quartermaster of the royal stables, Karl Hesselschwerdt, acted as his male procurer.
