Antique Chinese Imperial Palace Carpet

Antique Chinese Imperial Palace Carpet (Silk & Metal), 1800-1820.

A Chinese imperial carpet knotted in pure silk with flat weave made of metallic threads. The rather large dimensions for a carpet belonging to this very rare group of Chinese imperial carpets are certainly a reason to further appreciate the technical ability and graphic quality of this “jewel” which precisely in the “golden yellow” color identifies its nobility and its very uniqueness. The main border echoes the decorative style of the ancient 17th and 18th century carpets made in the oases of Yarkand and Khotan with the same knotting and weaving technique, with the peach blossom motif to symbolize spring. The pattern of the carpet develops on a reticular structure which also recalls the “chesti” structure present in many Persian carpets such as the Bakhtiari. In this wonderful imperial carpet, the grid that sets the knotted motifs on the wire woven areas is chiseled with small floral motifs in silk. The small medallions present within the plain weave areas carry the double “Ruyi” cloud motif in two colors, creating a sort of small medallion. The open “Ruyi” cloud symbol, unlike the second variant with the trail, is typical of older carpets. Between the main border and the background, runs the pearl border, considered one of the “8 precious things” in Confucianism.

Antique Chinese Jade Dragon Seal w. Authenticity Report

Here we have a superb hand carved Antique Chinese jade dragon seal.

This wonderful seal measures 3 5/16" tall by 1 5/16" deep by 1 1/8" wide (84mm x 33mm x 29mm).

It is made from nephrite jade and microscopic examination shows evidence of burial of this artifact including calcification, suffusion, weathering and non eye visible microscopic soil rust occurring to one section of the natural jade.

On the bottom of the seal are remnants of cinnabar sealing paste.

This one of a kind Chinese hand carved jade dragon chop presents beautifully and would make a superb addition to any collection of fine Chinese antiques and art.

The photos form part of the description of this fine jade seal.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT 'FAKE' JADE

Unfortunately, many items represented as Jade both online and elsewhere are not Jade but are actually a variety of other minerals, rocks or man-made materials that to varying degrees look like Jade but are not. These items are are generally regarded as 'fake' jades, even though they might be given misleading names like Peking jade, Dushan jade, Ice jade and so on.

In modern usage Jade is a term that correctly used means either Nephrite Jade or Jadeite Jade and not other materials.

In addition, Ruby Lane listing guidelines stipulate that any items offered for sale as Jade must be in fact either Nephrite Jade or Jadeite Jade.

As professional gemmologists, registered valuers, specialist appraisers, jewellery historians, antique and jade dealers with over forty years experience, we have the necessary expertise, qualifications, training and lab facilities to ensure that every Jade item we offer for sale has been fully tested including density testing and is genuine Jade, that is either Nephrite or Jadeite.

We advise collectors, antique dealers, auction houses, insurers and jewellers. We are involved in the management and development of private collections of antiques, antiquities and jewels including important Jades and Asian antiques.

It is the case that in neolithic and ancient China, and ever since, objects have been carved from a variety of hardstones not just Nephrite. However, for those early carvers who had access to Nephrite Jade, it would have been the case that they could readily distinguish Nephrite from the other hardstones by its unique and difficult working properties. In early Chinese cultures that had access to Nephrite, it appears that Nephrite was the preferred material for the the manufacture of certain kinds of ritualistic and other objects. Later, Nephrite came to be associated with the noble moral qualities of Confucianism. Nephrite became the preferred material for the production of important and valuable carved objects, and carved Nephrite objects became the possessions of a priviledged few. During the Qing dynasty, Jadeite from Burma became available to Chinese carvers and by the end of the Qing had become the preferred material for jewellery and many kids of carved objects.

It is also the case that most reproductions of more recent manufacture are made from materials other than Jade, this due to the much higher cost of Nephrite and Jadeite in comparison with that of other materials such as Serpentine and so on.

Of course there is a great deal more to the process of accurately dating antique and archaic jades and identifying reproductions than correctly identifying the material and placing it in context. It is a field too vast to summarize here. It requires an extensive knowledge of and experience examining both genuine archaic and antique jades and reproductions. Some matters for consideration include: are the stylistic features correct for the culture and period, does high magnification reveal period correct carving techniques and tool marks or do these indicate later manufacture, does high magnification and testing reveal period consistent surface changes due to age and prolonged burial or are these absent or are the surface changes that are seen instead consistent with the various artificial processes that may be applied to a later reproduction in order to simulate the surface changes of age and burial. We use our expertise, experience and facilities to carefully assess every object we handle, only those jades that meet the criteria for authenticity and period are offered for sale. In addition, the jade objects we offer for sale on Ruby Lane as Jade must be either Nephrite Jade or Jadeite Jade.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT 'FAKE' ANTIQUITIES AND ANTIQUES

Unfortunately, many items represented as authentic Antiquities are not genuinely ancient objects at all. Instead they are later reproductions, mostly of very recent manufacture, though a few reproductions of ancient objects are much older. Regardless of age if a later reproduction is represented as genuinely ancient then it becomes a 'fake' antiquity.
Likewise, if a later reproduction is represented as genuinely antique then it becomes a 'fake' antique.

It is always wise to deal with experienced and knowledgable dealers who are members of the governing international and national antique and art dealers associations. The membership process involves assessments of the dealer's reputation, industry experience, qualifications and knowledge. Only those meeting these standards are granted membership. Membership formally recognizes the dealer's expertise. Members comply with the associations' codes of practice and guidelines regarding authenticity and reproductions.

We are of course members of the premier national and international associations for antique and art dealers, namely...

- Members of the Confédération Internationale des Négociants en Oeuvres d'Art CINOA
- Members of the Australian Antique and Art Dealers Association AA&ADA

as well as...

- Members of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers NCJV
- Members and Fellows of the Gemmological Association of Australia GAA
- Members of the Society of Jewellery Historians

We advise collectors, antique dealers, auction houses, insurers and jewellers. We are involved in the management and development of private collections of antiques, antiquities and jewels including important Jades and Asian antiques.

Antique Chinese Bed Qing Dynasty c1700's Ironwood Platform Tielimu 54"x82"

This is an antique Chinese Qing dynasty platform bed from the early or mid 1700's. Made of solid ironwood (tielimu 铁力木). Brough from Bejing to Hong Kong in the early 1980's it was professionally re-strung using traditional methods and material by the Hong Kong antique gallery where it was last sold in the early 1990's. This is a far superior restoration than simple wooden boards that are sometimes used. The black lacquer finish was waxed with beeswax and polished.

It is a tru rare beauty and in fact rather comfortable for lounging on.

Renaissance Revival, the most ubiquitous furniture style following the Civil War, drew inspiration from the Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as well as the classical world. Nineteenth-century archaeological discoveries in Greece, Italy, and Egypt prompted designers to adapt and reinterpret designs and motifs from the past. Renaissance Revival’s rather masculine characteristics and grand scale make it easy to identify. Decorative elements took precedence over functionality. Mythical creatures, garlands, foliage, wild game, classical busts, scrolls, tassels, and portrait medallions appeared in high-relief carving. The incorporation of columns, pediments, and pilasters enhanced pieces. Gilded incising, marquetry, burled panels, wood veneering, ebonized wood, and marble tops commonly embellished pieces. Furniture was typically made with dark woods, such as walnut and rosewood.

Antique Victorian Parlor Brass Gone With The Wind Hubbard & Bradley Floral Lamp

Step back in time with this enchanting electrified Victorian lamp, a treasure from the transition of gas to electric lighting. Celebrating the craftsmanship of the esteemed Bradley and Hubbard Manufacturing Company, this piece reflects the opulent tastes circa 1890-1910.
The lamp boasts a delicate pink glass globe, resplendent with hand-painted floral arrangements, each petal and leaf meticulously rendered to create a bouquet that never wilts. The globe's soft hues cast a warm, inviting glow, turning any room into a cozy haven.
At its foundation, the lamp features an onyx base, a prized material of the era, known for its solidity and luxurious appeal. The lamp's structure is further enhanced by a wealth of ornate brass details—scrolls, flourishes, and classical motifs—all typical of the Victorian pursuit of beauty and elegance.

Originally, these lamps were designed to burn oil. They had a central burning wick, with the oil reservoir housed below the globe. The beautiful hand-painted globes served not only as a light diffuser but also as a decorative piece, showcasing the Victorian era's love for ornamentation and artistry in everyday objects. They were typically used in parlors and were a sign of status and elegance. This lamp once belonged to a sprawling Victorian estate built in 1875 and was purchased at an antique auction house in Norfolk, VA.

Rare Victorian Style 4 Font Kerosene Brass Parlor Floor Lamp (Electrified)

This is a hard to find Victorian style brass floor/parlor/piano/organ lamp with 3 conforming oil lamps on three arms having etched spherical glass shades rising on a tubular standard terminating on a tripod base ending on pad feet. In the center of the three fonts there is a 4th font with a larger glass shade on top of a brass globe. It has been electrified for use. There is a pull switch at the brass globe. In addition there is a inline switch on the cord. The lamp is about 78" high (up to the center glass chimney) and about 28" in diameter. I could not find this particular lamp anywhere online so far. I used to have a 3 font lamp before, which appears in google online searches.
