Angelo Zoffoli
1860-1910 | Italian

Cardinal with Elegant Company

Signed "A. Zoffoli Roma" (lower right)
Oil on canvas

A sumptuously dressed cardinal enjoys the company of a fabulously extravagant party in this striking oil on canvas by the Italian painter Angelo Zoffoli. The vibrantly hued painting illustrates the artist’s genius at rendering delightful narratives in remarkable detail. Entitled Cardinal with Elegant Company, the work is a superb example of Zoffoli's technical virtuosity—from the elaborate gowns, coats and powdered wigs of the guests to the marbled and gilded interior, every opulent detail is meticulously captured.

Such works satirizing the clergy would have been severely censured just a generation earlier. Yet, by the time Zoffoli picked up the brush, the public had grown discontent with the hypocrisy of the clergy, many of whom enjoyed lavish lifestyles. Cardinal paintings such as this became highly popular during the period, and Zoffoli emerged alongside Georges Croegaert and Andrea Landini as some of the leading painters of this genre.

This style of table would have originally been used in England from the mid-17th Century onwards but then became popular in country houses. The tables, which are of a rectangular design, each feature a moulded top, above a single oak lined, dovetailed drawer. The drawer on both tables displays the Kirkland Kitchens of Kendall brass label, as well as boasting a moulded drawer front and retains its original oak knobs. Below is a shaped frieze and the tables feature shaped sides too. The tables are raised on ring turned legs, united at the base by a pot board, with a moulded edge. The pot board frame is moulded and also acts as stretchers between the legs, which terminate on block feet. The tables have been handmade using traditional mortise and tenon construction.

The tables feature a rich brown honey oak colour. They have a fantastic colour, depth and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.

Beautiful Antique Marble & Bronze Table Lamp from the renowned J.B. Hirsch with DAV NY ART from circa 1900!

This wonderful piece of The American Gilded Age is truly an excellent find! . This lovely piece's original cast bronze pedestal is stamped with "DAV NY ART", signifying work from J. B. Hirsch in the New York Bronze Works of Manhattan's Lower East Side. The stamp on the bottom of the bronze footing notes that it is an original, not a reproduction. It features very delicately carved laurels and vines on the beautiful old marble pieces (see photos). It has, however, seen some wear over the last 120 years! At some point in time, the entire lamp was probably dropped as there are several small scuffs on the marble and, most importantly, the bronze base was bent and broken. All the pieces were intact, so I have repaired it with metal epoxy, trying to keep the repair mininal while keeping the appearance as clean as possible. All the trademarks and serial numbers are visible and clear. The bronze is beautifully patinated and has only had a light lemon juice wipe down. I've added felt feet pads to the base to compensate for the damage and keep the lamp solidly balanced in use. I've added a vintage beaded, textured linen shade in a soft biege with a white silk lining. The lamp stands 23" total on a 5" round base. The shade is 11" across the bottom, 5" across the top and 9" tall plus beading. It has a single standard bulb with vintage, but probably not original, wiring and plugs in excellent working order. There are more photos available of the repair upon request, but the two that I've included really do show it well. It would be a wonderful world if this lamp was perfect but, then again, none of us are and we all deserved some more time to shine!

John Koch
Male Torso

Pencil, coloured pencil and chalk on paper, titled (lower left), signed (lower right), 31cm x 46cm, (51cm x 68cm framed).

John Koch was an American painter and teacher, and an important figure in 20th century Realism. He is best known for his light-filled paintings of urban interiors, often featuring classical allusions, many set in his own Manhattan apartment. His work is in the collections of prominent American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and many others. Dorothy Parker's last published article was a 1964 appreciation of Koch's paintings and the nostalgic New York that they evoked: "I know Mr. Koch only through his paintings, and through the almost lyrical tributes to his works. I do not know what school of painting he belongs to; he is not, I believe, avant-garde, and he is, I gather, though I have to strain to take it in, a realist—but not of the ashcan school of the Glackens, Luks, Sloan group. He takes his realism out on the rich. His lovely ladies step out of Edith Wharton, and his graceful gentlemen come from Henry James."

18th Century French Port Scene Oil Painting from Provence

Sharing similarities of a mid-17th-century Italian capriccio painting, this French oil painting from Provence depicts fantastical architecture set amongst the more realistic setting of a bustling port. This unsigned painting from the 1700s is after Claude-Joseph Vernet, the 18th-century French painter who was known for his coastal scenes that were dotted with ancient architecture.

Numerous citizens (including a black dog), engaging in activities ranging from fishing to swimming, are enjoying the blue sky, despite the large gray cloud that can be seen in the distance. There are quite a few rowboats on the water, with two massive freighters off the rocky shore in the foreground, which has an accumulation of green moss with some sparse grass coverage. Impressive stone structures can be seen rising from the waters, in front of the distant shore that features a large aqueduct topped by a pergola. A mountain range can be seen even further in the distance, behind additional architecture that lines the utmost coast. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame and would make a wonderful wall-mounted piece of art for just about any room of the house.

Wilhelmus Beekman

A little history: Beekman Place was named after Willem Beekman whose descendent James Beekman built a family mansion called “Mount Pleasant” in 1765. Later during the Revolutionary War, this mansion was the site where Nathan Hale was tried for being a spy. He was hung in an orchard nearby.  Because the Beekman family was very influential in the development of Manhattan, this little street still bears their name which runs between 49th and 51st St. East of First Ave. “Mount Pleasant” unfortunately was torn down in 1874, but many beautiful buildings went up in the years to follow especially just before W.W.II. One of the most impressive buildings is 1 Beekman Place which is on the corner of 50th St. and Mitchell Place. This co-op which was built in 1929 rises 17 floors and has 39 apartments.

Wilhelmus Beekman's name is perpetuated in the names of William Street and Beekman Street, New York City, which latter became legally a street in 1734. The Beekman homestead in New Amsterdam was built by Wilhelmus Beekman in 1670 near the present corner of Pearl and Beekman Streets. A street was laid out through the property and was designated Beekman Street by the public in his honor. As New York City grew new streets were opened where formerly the farmers had only the easement or right of way. This was the origin of Beekman Street, which was laid out and graded in 1752, although since 1656 the farmers had the right to drive their cattle to the commons through it. A second thoroughfare, running at a right angle to the first was called William Street, after Beekman's first, or Christian, name. Beekman Tower, the 76-story skyscraper designed by architect Frank Gehry and later renamed 8 Spruce Street, first utilized the Beekman name due to its proximity to Beekman Street.
