THE BLUE MARBLE

THE BLUE MARBLE — On December 7, 1972, the astronauts of Apollo 17 snapped one of the most important pictures in history, the so-called “Blue Marble” image of Earth, captured from a distance of about 45,000 kilometers (28,000 miles) as they raced toward the Moon. To this day, no one is sure who actually took the photo. Spacemen Gene Cernan, Ron Evans, and Jack Schmitt have all claimed credit for it.
