BURRILLVILLE — The Conjuring house is for sale. Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty announced Thursday morning that it is handling the sale of the house at 1677 Round Top Rd., which was the site of events that inspired the movie "The Conjuring."
The property is listed for $1.2 million.
Owners Cory and Jen Heinzen, in a live video on Facebook Thursday afternoon, explained that they were overwhelmed by how much it took to own a notorious house that they had turned into a business.
The farmhouse is currently rented overnight to people who style themselves as paranormal researchers. The Heinzens said they will be picky about who buys the house and not sell it to someone who wants to commercialize it beyond the overnight visits and day tours they run now. Cory Heinzen said he lives with post-traumatic stress disorder and that he's worried that late-night trespassers on the property may trigger an altercation. Jen Heinzen said the couple aren't very good at running the business and that they have lost money to an unscrupulous contractor and had to have the work done a second time. The Heinzens said that they will try to make it a condition of the sale that the new buyer will honor all overnight bookings, which they said are sold out through the end of next year. They said day tours will continue until at least Halloween this year.
The real-estate agency called it "one of the most well-known haunted houses in the United States."
"Legend has it, the home is haunted by the presence of Bathsheba Sherman, who lived in the house in the 1800s," the agency said in a news release. "To this day, countless happenings have been reported. The chilling stories, incidents and recollections of residents and visitors of the property have been told in dozens of media productions including books, movies, and television shows."
