Show-stopping pair of Empire style armchairs by luxury furniture and interiors brand Rose Tarlow. They retail in the $20,000 range. Slightly oversized, with dramatically scaled dolphin armrests. Generously sized seats for a comfortable sit. Upholstered in their original muted tapestry style chenille, with a coordinating silk stripe on the back side. The hardwood frames and carved details have been coated with gesso in the traditional manner, and then gilded. 

Both are structurally solid, and the upholstery and padding are still excellent. The majority of the gilding is intact - but as you can see in the photos, the arms and the top surface of the backrest show significant wear and the arms will need to be re-gilded. Both areas have defined edges that would make it a fairly simple talk for a gilder to re-apply a matching gold leaf. No damage to any of the wood, no nicks, dings or other issues. 

Dimensions: 42” tall. The backrest is 24” wide at the top. The seat at front is 30” wide, 21” deep and 19” high. The armrests are 30” at the highest point.

1850 Henry Hawkey Square Grand Piano with Mother of Pearl Keys

This recent acquisition is a truly unique and stunning instrument. Built in 1850 by Henry Hawkey, NY, the keyboard features mother of pearl naturals, and rosewood sharps. Above the keyboard, the fallboard has mother of pearl inlay in the shape of flowers, as well as painted designs. The iron frame also has lovely hand-painted flowers. The case has beautiful veneer and nice lines, with square edges rather than rounded. This piano will be receiving a very careful, museum quality restoration, retaining the original parts.

Victorian period mahogany piano bench with adjustable height. The original 19th century bench is constructed with superb quality craftsmanship. It has a rectangular upholstered cushion seat over a X-form frame. A paper label underneath the seat reads, “SPOFFORD Manuf. & Co Boston Mass”. Adjustable height mechanism, in working condition, raises from 18 inches to a full height of 23 inches. The rugged mechanism is operated by turning wood knobs at both ends. Good overall condition with minor wear throughout. Structurally sound. The wood has a beautiful deep and rich color finish. This bench is a valuable addition to any quality furniture collection.

Service for 12 Of Minton Gilded Laurel Plates

Here is a pristine raised-paste 22-karat gold service from the storied firm of Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. The set features the timeless laurel motif, first used thousands of years ago in Greek art. To the ancient Greeks the laurel wreath was a symbol of victory, honor and peace, and hence they crowned their olympic champions with them.

The design features tangential laurel leaves circumnavigating the plate in 22-karat gold on a cream rim. The laurel motif is echoed in acid-etched 22-karat gold bands around both the plate well and plate rim for a truly elegant service.

The set includes dinner, salad and bread plates, as well as teacups and saucers. An extra teacup and saucer is included for 62 pieces total. Made for Shreve, Crump & Low and Company, Boston.

The service consists of:

J.E. Caldwell Sterling Coffee Tea Service Set 6 Piece Art Nouveau

Beautiful, hand made museum quality 6 piece tea and coffee service set with a large serving tray by J.E. Caldwell Philadelphia in sterling silver. The entire estate set is composed of sterling silver and stamped with J.E. Caldwell, sterling and makers marks. Based on our estimates, this art nouveau style set is from around the turn of the 20th century. Every lid, handle and moving part functions properly. There are signs of wear, scratches and even small dents, pitting and oxidization (which can be mostly cleaned with a good polish). This is vintage condition. That being said -- it has been very well kept and is in great shape for its age. The burner appears to function like a vintage lighter using cotton or rayon balls - this cheap material is untested and will likely need to be replaced. We have included a sterling spoon that just has "Sterling" and a "W" on it -- this is likely not from the set but it was used by the original owners with this set for years so we will be including it for continuity.

By the 1840s, dozens of small potteries in Staffordshire were making spaniels in a variety of sizes, ranging from around 5cm in height to over 30cm.
‘They were made and sold as facing pairs. The earliest were simply fashioned from earthenware, press- moulded in two pieces and painted by women or children in lots of different colours: black, russet brown or lustre. The collar and chain are moulded in the figure and usually gilded, and some dogs have glass eyes.’

Although they were a cheap product, made in their thousands to be sold at markets and fairs, they often have charming expressions full of character.
