Antique Victorian sofa settee

Antique Victorian sofa settee couch, excellent condition, beautiful example. This settee was newly upholstered and purchased through Nimbus Antiques in 2009, used as a bedroom showpiece for a year and in dry storage thereafter. In pristine condition then and now, home ready and comfortable to sit on. All 4 casters in great condition, woodwork joins are solid, in either Mahogany or Walnut (I bought two similar pieces at the same time and can't remember which is which). If it is walnut then the grain is very tight, but maybe somebody with more of an expert eye can let me know.

This really is as good a condition as they come in.

This is a superb large Vintage twin pedestal dining table in elegant George III style, crafted in mahogany with twelve Chippendale chairs and dating from the late 20th Century.

Capable of seating twelve people in regal comfort it is an extraordinary piece of furniture which will add splendour to any room.

The top has three leaves which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion and it is raised on a pair of "gun barrel" quadruple splay reeded leg bases fitted with elegant lion's paw brass castors.

The fabulpous set of Chippendale style chairs feature two armchairs and ten side chairs and have beautifully shaped and carved backrests with an attractive pierced central splat. The carvers have curved open arms and they all have splay legs to the back with elegant carved cabriole legs.

The amazing craftsmanship that has gone into this elegant dining set is immediately obvious, the lovely warm tones and grain of the mahogany ensuring the table is shown off to perfection.

J.E. Caldwell Sterling Coffee Tea Service Set 6 Piece Art Nouveau

Beautiful, hand made museum quality 6 piece tea and coffee service set with a large serving tray by J.E. Caldwell Philadelphia in sterling silver. The entire estate set is composed of sterling silver and stamped with J.E. Caldwell, sterling and makers marks. Based on our estimates, this art nouveau style set is from around the turn of the 20th century. Every lid, handle and moving part functions properly. There are signs of wear, scratches and even small dents, pitting and oxidization (which can be mostly cleaned with a good polish). This is vintage condition. That being said -- it has been very well kept and is in great shape for its age. The burner appears to function like a vintage lighter using cotton or rayon balls - this cheap material is untested and will likely need to be replaced. We have included a sterling spoon that just has "Sterling" and a "W" on it -- this is likely not from the set but it was used by the original owners with this set for years so we will be including it for continuity.

The anterior surface of the box bears the original gilt metal drawer handles and escutcheon to each drawer.

The hinged panel to either side is embellished with an impressive applied carved wood floral rosette motif accented with a pensile drop.

One drawer of this exceptional and substantial canteen table has a vacant and versatile storage compartment to the rear portion.

English floor clock, 18th century, mahogany veneer with root wood mirror, bead bar strips, turned columns, white dial with Roman numerals and gold-plated hands, polychrome flower painting with a woman at the garden pond, movement with solid hook-and-eye movement and hour strike on bell, starts running. Movement must be checked for accuracy.

Service for 12 Of Minton Gilded Laurel Plates

Here is a pristine raised-paste 22-karat gold service from the storied firm of Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. The set features the timeless laurel motif, first used thousands of years ago in Greek art. To the ancient Greeks the laurel wreath was a symbol of victory, honor and peace, and hence they crowned their olympic champions with them.

The design features tangential laurel leaves circumnavigating the plate in 22-karat gold on a cream rim. The laurel motif is echoed in acid-etched 22-karat gold bands around both the plate well and plate rim for a truly elegant service.

The set includes dinner, salad and bread plates, as well as teacups and saucers. An extra teacup and saucer is included for 62 pieces total. Made for Shreve, Crump & Low and Company, Boston.

This handsome pair of Neoclassic parcel-ebonized tables are a find! The are made of gilt bronze mounted mahogany in a traditional "tables de chevet" style. They are Italian in origin from the first quarter of the 19th Century. Each is inset with a grey marble top sitting above two drawers raised on turned tapered legs. Legs are joined by a shaped under-tier ending in turned feet. They have elegant lines and would be very chic as end tables.

An exceptional Louis XV style kingwood shaped single drawer desk with bombe cabinet, a conforming writing surface with tooled gilt border detail, mounted decorative figural and foliate gilt ormolu adorning the cabriole legs, cabinet, and feet. The bombe cabinet freely sits at the end of the desk and is adorned with ram’s head and foliate ormolu, and is fitted with four graduated drawers and a hand painted landscape on its verso. The cabinet can be removed from the desk if desired. Late 19th Century English Mahogany and Rosewood Partners Desk

This is a partners desk made in England, circa 1890. The top of the desk is beautifully shaped with a nicely molded edge. There are 3 brown leather panels with gold tooling. On the front side of the desk there are 4 drawers on the right and left with a long drawer to the middle. The back of the desk has a drawer over a cupboard door on the right and left with a long drawer to the middle. All of the drawer fronts are banded in mahogany with a string inlay of ebony, a satinwood banding and rosewood to the middle of each drawer. The right and left sides of the desk are banded in mahogany with a string inlay of ebony and satinwood with rosewood to the middle of each end. The cupboard doors are finished in the same manner as the right and left ends of the desk. Even the back of the cupboard doors are done in rosewood ( a sure sign of outstanding quality as this is not seen unless the doors are opened ).

The cupboard doors open to reveal 1 shelf with open storage. There is outstanding quality decorative gilt metal ormolu throughout the entirety of the desk. The handles are of the finest quality. All of the locks on the desk are signed Brahma Locks ( Brahma locks are well known as the finest locks to be had throughout Britain and were only used on the finest of the finest because of their extreme expense ) the inside of the desk ( where your legs go ) is also finished in the same manner as the right and left ends of the desk with all inlays and gilt metal ormolu ( another sign of pure quality ). Even the plinth base that the desk sits on is rosewood with string inlays of ebony and satinwood. The finish and physical condition are wonderful. This is a spectacular, amazing quality English partners desk. It is as good as it can get and is the best of the best. It measures 79 in. wide x 43 1/2 in. deep x 31 1/2 in. tall.

Although no one knows who made the first Staffordshire dog, the starting point was certainly a dog celebrity: Dash, Queen Victoria’s closest childhood companion, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, painted by Landseer and appearing in many prints,’ says specialist Paul Atterbury.

By the 1840s, dozens of small potteries in Staffordshire were making spaniels in a variety of sizes, ranging from around 5cm in height to over 30cm.

‘They were made and sold as facing pairs. The earliest were simply fashioned from earthenware, press- moulded in two pieces and painted by women or children in lots of different colours: black, russet brown or lustre. The collar and chain are moulded in the figure and usually gilded, and some dogs have glass eyes.’

Although they were a cheap product, made in their thousands to be sold at markets and fairs, they often have charming expressions full of character.

‘They were part of a Victorian cottage interior, definitely not for the smart home. So, from a historical perspective, they are an interesting indicator of increasing working-class wealth,’

How do you identify the maker?

As the fashion took hold, other dogs – often with royal connections – also appeared. Prince Albert’s favourite greyhound, Eos, was modelled seated and recumbent.

You might also find poodles and Newfoundlands, and groups with children and dogs, but all of these were made in smaller numbers.

Dating dogs is not an exact science, because the same moulds were used throughout the 19th century, often handed from factory to factory. Some companies, such as James Kent, founded in the 1890s, were still producing figures until the 1950s.

‘Early dogs are never marked. Despite their simplicity, they are well made with sharp modelling. The body is hollow and they feel relatively light. Gilding will probably look a bit worn. Later 19th-century dogs are slip-moulded and, as moulds are reused, the detail becomes blurred, figures clunkier and the painting cruder,’

‘I wouldn’t call the 20th-century versions fakes because production processes are the same, they were made in England and not meant to deceive. These are quite different from modern fakes from the Far East: they are heavy, shiny, with a garish, regular, mechanical look and brassy gilding.’
