East River Living - 455 E 51st St #3ED, New York, NY Part 1.

Built in 1930 FACING A SECRET GARDEN...

ON A SECRET CUL-DE-SAC…

JUST BEYOND A SECRET GATE...

SOULFUL 3 BEDROOM w/2 WORKING FIREPLACES & FULL DINING ROOM

Sweetly situated in the famously private and well served Beekman Terrace (a handsome 1924 building coveted for its discreet riverfront location off of a quiet cul-de-sac), this grandly intimate residence is a fantastic find. Unfolding like a sweet cottage, this home's timeless touches make it a wonderful classic.

With three comfy bedrooms and two windowed bathrooms -- plus a formal living room and full dining room (both with respective wood-burning fireplaces), this lovable corner residence is ideal for both entertaining and quiet relaxing. There is a home office, a balcony off of the dining room, a reading area, and a lovely gallery hall, there are a plethora of spaces for life's big and intimate moments.

The foyer is naturally lit by the nearby home office, and has a cedar-lined coat closet. The living room is graced by its working fireplace and picturesque garden and river views. The formal dining room enjoys another wood-burning fireplace, and its new French doors offer direct access to a private balcony. Served by a well-appointed kitchen with Subzero fridge, a new oven, and a clever dining banquette, meals here can easily be a grand or a low-key affair.

The primary bedroom has impressive cedar-lined closets, and is served by a windowed bath. Once featured in Architectural Digest, the secondary bedroom offers crown moldings, and custom shelving and cabinetry created by the former owner of this home, Peter Marino. On the other side of this home is a wonderfully private guest bedroom suite, served by its own windowed bath (with a washer/dryer).

Quietly positioned along Beekman Terrace's prized Southern side — with an enchanting peek at the nautical beauty of the East River, and bird’s eye views of the enchanting "secret garden" just beyond the building's private gate house — this easy-to-love home enjoys private storage, and access to the pet-friendly building's river-view roof deck and the well-run building's fitness and laundry rooms. Within a stone's throw are the East River Promenade, Detmold Park, the E/F/M trains, and prime access to every area cultural, dining, and shopping destination -- not to mention the benefits of a very mindful neighborhood association and private security.

Here is one of the best kept secrets in Manhattan: Your well-scaled, river-peek sweetheart...facing a secret garden...on a secret cul-de-sac...just beyond a secret gate...awaits.

This is the original layout of the apartment.

Below is my remodel

I sealed one entrance from the kitchen into the dinning room making more room for the eat in kitchen. The other door was so close it didnt detract from the flow. I moved the Primary Bedroom from the room still listed as Primary to the other ennd of the apartment creating a new Primary Suite sealing the Library to become a Dressing room. I moved the laundry room to the closet in the Home Office, and removed the shower, and replaced it with a Jacuzzi Soaking tub. Making the bedroom off the Library the New Primary Bedroom. I sealed one of the doors going from the Living room into the guest bedroom turning it into the Boys Guest Room. The Old Primary Bedroom I turned into the Louis XV bedroom. The guest bathroom remained the same with the white marble.

The Living Room

I sealed the door going from the Livingroom into the Boys Guest Room. I replaced the yellow wall with wooded paneling

‘Although no one knows who made the first Staffordshire dog, the starting point was certainly a dog celebrity: Dash, Queen Victoria’s closest childhood companion, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, painted by Landseer and appearing in many prints,’ says specialist Paul Atterbury.

'Dash' 1836, by Edwin Henry Landseer (British, 1802-1873).

By the 1840s, dozens of small potteries in Staffordshire were making spaniels in a variety of sizes, ranging from around 5cm in height to over 30cm.

‘They were made and sold as facing pairs. The earliest were simply fashioned from earthenware, press- moulded in two pieces and painted by women or children in lots of different colours: black, russet brown or lustre. The collar and chain are moulded in the figure and usually gilded, and some dogs have glass eyes.’

Although they were a cheap product, made in their thousands to be sold at markets and fairs, they often have charming expressions full of character.

‘They were part of a Victorian cottage interior, definitely not for the smart home. So, from a historical perspective, they are an interesting indicator of increasing working-class wealth,’

How do you identify the maker?

As the fashion took hold, other dogs – often with royal connections – also appeared. Prince Albert’s favourite greyhound, Eos, was modelled seated and recumbent.

You might also find poodles and Newfoundlands, and groups with children and dogs, but all of these were made in smaller numbers.

Dating dogs is not an exact science, because the same moulds were used throughout the 19th century, often handed from factory to factory. Some companies, such as James Kent, founded in the 1890s, were still producing figures until the 1950s.

‘Early dogs are never marked. Despite their simplicity, they are well made with sharp modelling. The body is hollow and they feel relatively light. Gilding will probably look a bit worn. Later 19th-century dogs are slip-moulded and, as moulds are reused, the detail becomes blurred, figures clunkier and the painting cruder,’

‘I wouldn’t call the 20th-century versions fakes because production processes are the same, they were made in England and not meant to deceive. These are quite different from modern fakes from the Far East: they are heavy, shiny, with a garish, regular, mechanical look and brassy gilding.’

Sweet ANTIQUE STAFFORDSHIRE 19th Century Tall Spaniel Dog Jug or Pitcher

What to look for when buying a Staffordshire dog ceramic:

Your checklist for genuine antique Staffordshire dogs...

  1. Press-moulded body with defined modelling and a very small firing hole in the base. (Later versions are slip-cast and there will be a larger hole in the base).
  2. Painted decoration: detailed with a face full of character and slight differences between the pair.
  3. The back may be painted.
  4. Soft gilding showing evidence of age.
  5. Signs of crazing, or firing flaws on the base.
  6. No maker’s mark.

Oil Painting Of Queen Victoria's Dog 'dash' After Landseer

Oil on wooden panel of Queen Victoria''s spaniel ''Dash'' after the original by Sir Edwin Landseer. Dash the spaniel was the favourite dog of Queen Victoria before and during the early years of her reign. The animal did gain some fame and was painted by Landseer in 1836, this work is a competent period copy of that work. The painting is in good condition it has been professionally cleaned, the panel has been split some time ago and the join is still visible in some lights. The painting has been mounted in a gilt oval slip as per the original, the gilt frame is most likely a bit later in date. The frame has had some repair and woodworm treated and filled. The whole is ready to hang and really does have a great decorative look. C.1840.
